Good and Evil (Logos)

No one on earth can be completely good or completely evil. There is an innate balance between the two in everyone. For someone to determine the actions of someone else as good or evil is a matter of opinion, because everyone’s perception of good and evil could differ. If someone does something bad but has good intentions, not everyone would agree that that person is completely evil or completely good.

In “how do you solve a problem like Frits Haber?” the reporters were talking about how Frits Haber used Nitrogen for both good and evil. He won a noble prize for discovering how to feed people with nitrogen from the air. Everyone thought he was a hero. However, he then used this same process of taking nitrogen from the atmosphere to make bombs, killing many people. He went from hero to criminal. Frits Haber is the epitome of good and evil combined.

In the “Flawed concept of good and evil” Hayao Miyazaki and Ashley Allis portray how within everything good lies something evil, and in everything evil lies something good. They show how the universal children’s story about the strong prince defeating the evil and saving the damsel in distress is not how life is at all. Normally when it is least expected, the person who is trusted the most and seems to be the most good, is going to be the person who turns around and does the most damage causing the most pain. With that, I must say that even the most hopelessly evil person can find the silver lining and do something good as well.

  1. I agree with you 100 percent that a person can not be completely be either good, or bad, but rater a balance between the two of them. I also agree with your idea that everyone’s perception of good and evil differ; based on each person’s past experiences their perceptions will be drastically different. In “How do you Solve a Problem Like Frits Haber” I found myself battling with if felt sorry for Frits Haber and his isolated death, or if I was appalled with his lack of respect for human life, and emotions. The latter won out, although Frits Haber managed to invent ammonium, which has aided us in the future, he took the life’s of thousands of innocent soldiers without the blink of an eye and is rumored to have celebrated his “success”. His utter disregard for human life angers me more than anything, Not only does this show his lack of humanity, but once returning from war, his wife Clara approached him and explained her disbelief that he would willingly gas thousands of soldiers, but Haber simply cast aside his wife’s opinion and later that night Clara took her own life. Instead of staying with his son, Haber went to war the next day and continued his slaughter of men. But Haber did have a good side, he did discover a way to make ammonium to aid in the growth of food. The cartoon “The Flawed Concept of Good and Evil” by Hayao Miyazaki, also explains that there is good in evil and evil in good, but encourages us preserve the balance between the two of them instead of fighting for one or the other. 2. I agree, no one is ever born good nor evil. It is all based upon how you were raised and your own moral standards and ideals; throughout your life you will form your own opinion on what will be your version of good and evil. Even some can be a mixture of both, like you mentioned with "How do you Solve a Problem Like Frits Haber" where he was a genius who brought so much to the world, yet he had no respect for man kind or emotions and turned his research into something evil. No matter how much good he brought to the world, his destructive actions shadowed over and made himself a bad person. He disregarded his own wife and son; after his wife got word of rumors of what her husband had done she told him of her disbelief but Haber disregarded his wife's judgement and she killed herself that night. In "Flawed concept of Good and evil" they talk about how in everything good there is evil, and vise versa, and how the people who can do the most good usually do the most bad. Everyone can be good or evil, its the actions you make that define you

  3. (Pathos)- People are a combination of both good and evil and both the comic strip and the audio talking about Fritz Haber provide evidence of this. There is no one person who is completely good or completely evil.
In the audio talking about Haber, the narrators of Haber’s story mention his discovery of Nitrogen in the air around us, and that this discovery would change mankind forever. Because of Haber’s discovery, the world would be able to hold more people than originally thought. This caused Haber to become the hero and he was immediately thought of as the good guy. But, as soon as Haber created the Chlorine gas that killed all of those soldiers, he became an evil person to some, but still a good person to others because he helped win that battle. So, this audio explains that you can be a great person, but just because you did something good in your life doesn’t mean you’ll never do anything bad in your life.
In the Comic strip, the idea that in all evil there is good, and in all good there is evil is portrayed at the end. This goes to show that one cannot be completely good or evil because there always has to be a balance between both. One’s goal is just to keep the balance between the two and not try to be completely good.
