Good and Evil (Ethos)

People are a combination of both good and evil. Fritz Haber is a perfect example of how a person is naturally both good and evil. He did scientific research in order to feed his home land Germany. His experiments with nitrogen lead to a scientific ground breaking way of using the element to make rich fertilized soil. That helped feed millions of people during a rough time in Germany. This also to date is used and feeds billions of people around the world. Unfortunately during WWI he completely changes the way he used nitrogen and uses it immorally to the point where his own wife confronts him and tells him he is wrong by using chemical warfare to make enemy soldiers drown within their own bodies with ammonia. Even though he contributed to society he also introduced chemical warfare which was also used in WWII on his Jewish relatives. In the "Flawed Concept of Good vs Evil" the way that evil is described is that we all have evil in us, it's just a matter of us controlling it in order for it to not become a problem. If we can keep hate away from our vision and hearts we are able to maintain a good vibe instead of being an evil person with hate pouring out of our souls. If people learn to look past jealousy and hate they can soar to their full potential. Evil can be controlled in our mind its just a matter of fact if a person is strong enough to do so.

  1. I completely agree with you when you say that people are a combination of good and evil, because let’s be honest, every one of us has messed up at least once and done something bad, and hopefully done something good as well. I believe that you have to look at the reason someone does anything to see whether they thought it was good or bad, because a lot of times we don’t put ourselves in their place. Fritz Haber just wanted to help his country to not only survive but also to prosper, and he did, but the end effects turned out to be bad. I don’t think he meant to find a way to make the gas that destroyed and killed so many Jews, but he stumbled upon a way to make it, and he was faced with a choice, and in his eyes he probably believed it was best for his country that they use this gas to fight in wars. Now when it comes to deciding if someone is good and does bad things or if someone is evil and does good things, I think you have to just look strictly at the action they are performing to decide whether it is good or evil, but when you are faced with deciding whether someone’s whole life is either evil or good it is much more difficult. The best thing to do would to take into accountability how much good someone did, then how much evil someone did, and whichever is more than that should be your judgment of them.

  2. I don't agree with the idea that people are both good and evil, and I don't think Fritz Haber is a good example. I think Haber was an evil man who managed to do a good thing, the fact that he was so pleased with himself to see his creation working by drowing those soldiers on land can attest to that. A statement such as "we are both good and evil" seems too broad to me. I believe people are good until thier circumstances causes them to do something morally unjust. As for the drawing it says that there is some evil in good and some good in evil. I feel like this speaks to an idea that most villans are the heroes of their own story, they believe their actions are justified due to their tunnel vision for personal gain, and these vilians think they are doing the right thing by commiting evil acts in the name of their own survival, or personal gain. I do not believe we are both good and evil, but I believe we start out good and learn to embrace evil or conquer it.
