Throughout both speeches David Foster and Toni Morrison state that we have the ability in our hands to choose to think a certain way, too think for others around us and not just for ourselves, but a majority do the opposite.
Both speakers prove a point by saying we have the ability to do something with ourselves that is different, that will keep us from the everyday routine that we and society impose in our mind. Most choose to stick to the routine to not see past themselves and the language that was taught over years. They both also talk about adults, the wise ones, being stuck in their own worlds not reaching out and not thinking of the young who just wish to learn of the world so that they may break free from within themselves.
Even though both speeches have many things in common they also have their contrasts. Within "This is Water" David Foster focuses on the aspect that every person has an automatic response to the world, which is that it revolves around yourself and everybody else is just in the way. While Toni Morrison's Lecture focuses on how language is something to be used to break through the everyday clutter that has accumulated from our past.
Even though there are differences in the lectures I believe that they lean more towards the same idea.
