Comparison
In the first reading from the book ( the three short stories) the moral of the first short story is when someone holds on to an idea of how the world should be it gets in the way of how the world really is. The second man didn't even know that the first man put down the woman because he was so worried about him breaking the rules. In the second short story the moral is to live in the moment and to not worry what is in front or behind you, life is best when you just live in the moment. And in the last short story the moral is not to worry about other people messing up because by worrying about them it causes you to mess up. The second story in the Norton Reader is about "existence precedes essence" meaning basically, we exist first and then we do things that define ourselves and live our lives in whatever way we choose, and this determines our essence, and what it means to be a human being. These two stores are similar in the fact that they both bring to point that our decisions are affecting the world and everything we do people will react and so our actions are what affect the worlds actions.

I don't normally like agreeing on these things but this time I am going to agree with you. In all three of the first short stories there was a lesson to be learned about being yourself and acting in the moment and not worrying yourself with things in the past. The second story "Existentialism" has a really elaborate way of explaining the choices we make as humans and why we make them. My favorite part in this passage is when he is telling the story of the boy in France. A huge choice he discusses in this instance is easily identified from this excerpt, "The boy was faced with the choice of leaving for England and joining the Free French Forces-that is, leaving his mother." Later he goes into Kantian's form of ethics in treating a person as a means or as an end in themselves. I believe that a major quality in what makes us who we are is how we treat others.
ReplyDeleteI also have to agree with this blog these stories tell us to just be ourselves and not always be worried about past events. The choices we make really do effect the world around us and the people will react to that. These stories really show the lessons that need to be learned when you just need to be yourself. You shouldn't worry about what others do it will only drag you down just continue to do the best you can and treat others kindly.
